About the Scholar
I grew up in Southeast Fresno, a block from where I now teach Race and Social Justice (US History) and Ethnic Studies. The apartments where I lived could best be described as squalor, despite the best efforts of those around me to change this miserable condition. The forces that created this squalor were invisible, so I did what most brown kids in the 90’s did if they are being honest: I hated myself and I viewed my own people as responsible for their own destruction. I became a teacher and historian to change the lives of those in the same conditions that created me. My personal and professional work has been an attempt to bear witness to the lived experiences of my students who struggle nobly for dignity against almost inhuman odds.
Don’t despair, fight.
