About the Speaker / Academic Achievement
Sukaina Hussain, MPH, serves as the Deputy Executive Director for the Sacramento Valley/Central California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization. Driven by her faith and Islamic values, Sukaina is a community advocate who has worked to build interfaith partnerships focused on social justice for many years. She received her Master of Public Health degree in 2014 and has used her background and skills to address systemic issues of injustice through program and policy development to improve the quality of life for local communities. This has helped to inform her past work as a community organizer with Faith in the Valley, Central Valley’s largest interfaith organization, by working to help achieve racial, economic and environmental justice. Through her work, she strives to engage community leaders and decision-makers on immigration, civil rights, voter engagement and legislative advocacy. During her time in Fresno, she has been honored as a recipient of the Way to Peace Award, appointed to serve on the ACLU Northern California Union Board and served as a guest speaker at local faith institutions, schools and universities to share her reflections as a Muslim woman and about Islam’s message of justice and equity.
Speaker’s Current Initiatives
Fresno County Legal Defense Fund helps to fund removal defense legal services for individuals facing deportation in the Central Valley.
Organizing the Muslim community on issues related to immigration, civil rights, civic engagement and legislative advocacy
Affiliations
Previously, I worked as a community organizer with Faith in the Valley, the Central Valley’s largest interfaith organization, focused on working towards racial, economic and environmental justice. Through this role, I actively worked with the interfaith Clergy Caucus which included interfaith leaders leading with moral voice and action on social justice issues locally.
